Film Exec Tells Black Writer: Black Women Don't Watch Horror Movies

Tracy Oliver, who is black, recalled an executive saying, “'Do Black [sic] women watch horror movies?'...He was just like, 'I don’t think that happens.'”

Tracy Oliver, who is a screenwriter and an actress, revealed it took her quite a while to start working on her new horror movie as male film executives believe black women don’t care about horror movies.

Oliver, known for co-writing the all-black comedy movie "Girls Trip," has announced that she has started writing and directing "Survive the Night," based on a novel of the same name, which will be produced by Pharrell.

In an interview with Tayler Montague for Rookie Magazine, Oliver talked about what she experienced as a woman of color, who is into the horror genre. Separately, on Twitter she expressed gratitude to the publication for letting her “rant” about her favorite things:

“So, I sold a horror movie," Oliver stated. "I’ve always loved the horror/thriller genre...As you know; there are not a lot of Black people in that space. Jordan Peele broke through in a major way with Get Out, which I love was inspired by. I’d already said prior to Get Out coming out, when people would ask what I’d want to do next–this sounds random because people don’t think of Black women and horror–but I was like, I want to do a horror movie, and not only do I want to do a horror movie, but I want it to be with Black women. So people were like, “That’s an interesting combination.” One of the execs who passed on it, his issue with it was: “Do Black women watch horror movies?”...He was just like, “I don’t think that happens.””

When Oliver mentioned “Get Out,” a 2017 horror movie based on systemic racism, as an example, the executive ignored the box-office hit, calling it "different" case.

"That’s always the thing people say when something does well, that it’s the exception," Oliver continued. "I know that not to be true, but the justification that everybody gives is that Get Out is the exception, or Girls Trip is the exception, instead of it proving that Black people do watch horror, or that Black women can be in big comedies.”

Horror is the new genre that appears to be  doing really good at the box office lately, with 2017 giving the world hits like such as "IT," "Get Out," "Annabelle: Creation," "Happy Death Day."

2018 is bringing even better movies to look forward to, such as, of course, "Survive the Night" and several others.
