Creepy but not scary

Insidious: The Last Key

Rated: 5/10

Horror movies are supposed to be scary. Off late, the kind of horror movies that are coming from Hollywood are more creepy rather than sending a chill down one’s spine.

Movies like The Omen (1976), Poltergeist (1982), Dracula (1958) and When a Stranger Calls (2006) were extremely scary. So much so that there was a time when one a cute little boy smiled at you, one would see Damien’s face from The Omen.  Or worse still, one would think twice before picking up the phone after watching When A Stranger Calls.

In Insidious: The Last Key things go bump in the night. The background score does add a bit of scare quotient. But it is also a giveaway. Those who love watching horror movies know the exact moment the ghost or the devil will make an entry. Horror movies are supposed to make one jump in the seat if not scream in fright and definitely not creep one out.

In this latest in the Insidious series, the evil which enters the human realm definitely comes under the creepy category — creepy boney fingers with keys at the end of each finger, dirty long hair, a deep hole for a nose and teeth covered in blood — that is not our version of scare.

While there are some reports that this might be the last in the installment, the way the film ends makes one wonder if this indeed is the last one in the franchise.

Director Adam Robitel could have used his props in a more scarier fashion instead of the usual fog machines and soundtracks that lack the shock and fear value.

A perfect pitch that has appeal

Pitch Perfect 3

*ing: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Hailee Steinfeld, Hana Mae Lee, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Chrissie Fit

Rated: 6/10

It is rare that the sequels are better than the original. Therefore, there is need to view movies that have series independently. Sadly, it is not always possible and comparisons always come in. Pitch Perfect 3 is no different. People who have seen the earlier ones will be a tad disappointed as this one is not even a patch on the previous ones.

However, all is not lost in this last one in the trilogy that is written by Kay Cannon and Mike White and directed by Step Up All In director Trish Sie. While it may not be as good as the first two, this one does have its funny moments that make you laugh and keep you amused and entertained for the majority of the time with Amy, played by Rebel Wilson, getting away with the funniest lines.

The problem with Pitch Perfect 3 is that you know what is coming and that takes away the surprise element, not that there are many here. Second, there is a little connect with the actors as they all come together for the last hurrah.

The high point of the film is the song that the Bellas sing — Cheap Thrills by Sia that was released in 2016.

In a week where there are no Hindi movies, this one makes for an interesting watch for the fans of this series.
