DANVILLE — The “Stripper Ripper” – despite its name – aims to be a family friendly slapstick comedy.
The film is the brainchild of Jake Aurelian (also known as Ripper the Clown), and will debut at Vintage Villains comic book store at 8 p.m. Saturday. Aurelian is known locally for authoring books and creating performance art based off his alter ego.
“People have been saying I should do a horror film,” he said. “I didn’t want to, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back to comedy.”
Instead, Aurelian created a film that spoofs off classic horror movies, à la the “Scary Movie” series. He explained there are a lot of scenes and plot devices often recycled in horror; so much so they’ve become caricatures of themselves.
These include killers who get their knives stuck in tree trunks just as they try to attack their victims, and the impressive ability murderers have to never slip in puddles of blood.
More than 40 people appear in the movie, or helped with the production of it. One actor, Shawn Hosseini, has worked with Aurelian on other similar projects.
“He gets an idea and if he asks us to participate, it’s always an honor,” Hosseini said.
Aurelian recently had a silent film selected and screened at the 2017 New Art Film Festival in Champaign.
Local ventriloquist Albert King worked mostly behind the camera on “Stripper Ripper,” but also appeared in front of it.
He said the quality of the film is the best of any other project he’s worked on.
“The editing on this film is amazing, especially because our overall budget was less than $100,” he said. “Jake can tell me what he wants and I can see it in my head.”
Other notable appearances include John Borowski (“American Ripper”), Philo Barnhart (artistic creator of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”) and Richie Berner (“Chicago Fire”).
While out-of-town players helped with the making of the film, it was mostly a community effort. Those who watch the film can spot more than 20 area locations.
Joe Phelp, who owns the barbershop in Westville, is sponsoring the screening on Saturday, and afterward there will be a forum with the film’s creators.
“My writing, performances and filmmaking are all intertwined,” Aurelian said. “It gives me an intense creative rush, and I’m obsessed with perfecting it.”
